Bill Gordon
In 2004 my own consultancy, Family Council Works, merged with FBS. I initially created Family Council Works (FCW) to offer family enterprises the benefit of my experience of creating a Family Council in my own family business.
I am a shareholder in a fifth generation family business. The statistics tell us that not many family businesses reach this stage, and I was convinced that in order to preserve and expand our legacy of successful family ownership, we needed to get organised. After a lot of work I established the Family Council as a key part of the overall governance structure and I then chaired the Council for five years as it developed a more progressive shareholder culture among a diverse group of owners.
FCW and FBS shared a desire to provide family enterprises with practical help and advice and we agreed that we would be far more effective doing this together as a larger group. This helps give us the experience, knowledge and resources to be thought leaders in this field.
In addition to my consulting work, I regularly speak at family business conferences. Between 2002 and 2004, I served on the Board of Directors of the Family Business Network, a not-for-profit international expert that is run by family businesses for family businesses.
